Murrells Inlet Area Guide

Murrells Inlet, the Seafood Capital of South Carolina is alive with the whispers of the breeze that calls you to come see her. Tall tales of the creek told by residents who’ve lived their entire lives there will enthrall the visitor or the new residents and the end of the day will bring a trip to one of the local restaurants who’ve made Murrells Inlet the place to be.

With more than 30 restaurants that serve mouth watering menus, Murrells Inlet has a taste of something for every palate. Italian, Chinese, Thai and good old American hamburger are all available here. You can even catch your own dinner! To learn more about Murrells Inlet, visit: Murrells Inlet

History
The summer people who came to Murrells Inlet in the 1800’s usually started out by train, transferred to steamboat, landing at the dock at Wachesaw rive landing. The steamboat dining rooms were famous for serving great meals and many of the cooks that worked on them would later settle in Murrells Inlet, opening their own restaurant, kicking off the area reputation for great food so long ago.

By then, the rice plantations had died and commercial fishing became the popular industry, with schooners transporting the catch north. Recreational fishing also became a fixture on the landscape, and in 1914, tourists could take fishing excursions out of the Inlet for five dollars a day and catch their own dinner!

During the Great Depression, Murrells Inlet was visited by A.M. Huntington from New York who spent millions to develop his 9,000 acre homestead and gardens. Hiring local craftsmen, he created his dream of building a Spanish castle. Building a church, medical clinic and community center for the residents of Sandy Island, Huntington was considered a philanthropist and would later have a state park named after him.
