History
Waccamaw and Winya Indians, the earliest known inhabitants of Pawleys Island called the area “Chicora”, meaning “the land” and that term is often used by locals for our breezy island. Quickly becoming a refuge from the mosquitoes that plagued other places during the summer, Pawleys Island just as quickly became the go-to place and even George Washington toured there, visiting several plantations in the area. Rice was the predominant crop at Pawleys Island and although it no longer is, there’s a festival to honor its contribution every year.

The Grand Strand, of which Pawleys Island is a part, began to be developed in the early 20th century, but the island was among one of the last areas to do so, taking a certain amount of pride in remaining undeveloped. Cypress sided cottages gave the community one of the nicknames that has stuck, arrogantly shabby and they can still be seen today. Incorporated around 1986, (some sources say 1984, others 1985) today, Pawleys Island is less secluded and more upscale, but still is surrounded by a quaintness and a slow pace that sets it apart from the rest of the east coast. Comfortable water temperature from May to October with abundant fishing, crabbing, fishing and bird watching make Pawleys Island a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy world or to settle down and make a home.

Brookgreen Gardens State Park Founded by the Huntingtons in 1931, this majestic garden museum preserves the native flora and fauna in their natural habitat as well as beautiful objects of art. Today, Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historic Landmark with an astounding collective of figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting.
